Rhys stood in the alcove of his office and stared out the window at the seascape. Water, warmed to a cobalt blue by the midday sun, stretched to the horizon. He couldn’t taste the salt in the air or hear the wind and the waves, but he knew they were there. Right on the other side of the glass pane. Those pieces of PI were as much a part of him as the color of his hair or eyes.

How could I have stayed away for so long?

Because it had been part of his plan. Finish his education, gain experience, then return home to build on the McCall heritage. Strengthen the foundation laid by his father and grandfather and those before them. Make his dad proud and be recognized as an equal.

Put your stamp on everything? Not going to happen, son.

Erik McCall’s way or the highway. Not this time, Dad.

He turned his back on the seductive vista. His gaze swept across the room, marveling once again at the space. He hadn’t been crazy about the shade of straw yellow Dana had selected when the building was under renovation, but nothing else would have brought in the light of day as well. It warmed the room and brightened the somber tones of the cherry and red oak furniture and black chairs. With the random accent pieces of Carolina blue and winter white, she’d brought the spirit of PI to the indoors.

Thank God for Dana. As prepared as he had been for the technical aspects of the kick-off meeting, Dana was the one who’d kept all the personalities on an even keel. She’d assuaged Mayor Wolfe’s concerns about schedules and budgets, gently guiding the majority of those decisions to their team rather than risking them on the whims of the mayoral office. The grin he’d bit back during the exchange now came out full force. She’d not only gotten the mayor to agree, he’d thanked her for it, even came to think of it as his idea. It’d be more work for them in the initial stages, but maintaining control of those aspects protected them from delays later on.

She’d welcomed Kevin and settled Stacy into submission by seating herself next to the redhead. Jake Matthews, already charmed by Dana, had refrained from his usual colorful language. At least during the course of the meeting. Not long after the session ended, Jake hadn’t hesitated to express his outrage at Kevin Davis representing McCall Construction.

“Little pup doesn’t know squat about construction. He’d be lucky to pour rain out of his boot with directions on the heel. Your daddy almost ran the company into the ground before you came back and put it to rights. Tell you right now, a lot of the boys are getting nervous about you not being over there.”

The burly foreman was the linchpin to keeping the work crews motivated and on schedule. His knowledge was invaluable, and his word carried weight. “Tell the guys to relax. This is a big project, and there’ll be plenty of work for a long time.
